GUIDED FLY FISHING

Experience New Zealand's Lower North Island Trout Country

Characterised by the beautiful but extremely rugged Ruahine and Tararua Ranges, the Manawatu & Wellington region has a myriad of fine trout waters on offer to explore. From large lowland rivers with very high numbers of both rainbow and brown trout to more remote and beautiful small spring-fed or backcountry style streams with more challenging but less fish of much larger size, there is plenty to choose from. These unique places have been Johnny's home waters for nearly 20 years.

Note: We highly recommend to book a number of days. This allows you time to adjust to our unique style of fishing techniques and New Zealand's wary trout. It also allows more travel time to give you better chances of success on each given day dependant on weather conditions. There are days on the water that can be very challenging for the angler to say the least, so by booking a number of days I can ultimately give you the best opportunity of shots at fish.

Wellington Fly Fishing Guides

My base is in Palmerston North, where plenty of water is on offer within a short 20 - 90min drive. These include: Manawatu River, Rangitikei River, Mangatainoka River, and Ruamahanga River systems. Palmerston North has a wide variety of accomodation options to cater for every budget. If you would like some recommendations just let me know.

A typical day starts with pick up ( generally 8am) at your accomodation or meeting at a pre-arranged location. This allows 7-9 hours of good fishing time before drop-off (generally 6pm). Seldom will I ever turn down a good evening rise in which case the day will end a little later!

A full day includes guiding, 4WD vehicle transport pick-up from your accomodation and drop-off, wader/boot hire,

stream-side lunch, snacks and refreshments.

If you require wader and boot hire I stock a full size range of quality breathable waders and good sturdy, supportive wading boots.

Daily Guide Rate NZD $790.00 per day (2019-2020 Season)

 MULTI-DAY BACKCOUNTRY

ADVENTURE

Experience New Zealand's Pure Wilderness Fly Fishing

North Island Fly Fishing Guides

Nestled between two mountain ranges, Altitude Flyfishing has some of the worlds finest backcountry flyfishing opportunities within close proximity.

Choose to hike-in or utilize helicopter access, which will maximise your fishing time and access more remote and very seldom fished rivers. For those who have a good fitness and fishing skill level, who want to experience the best our Lower North Island rivers have to offer, our backcountry fishing provides amazing scenery, much larger fish and more sight-fishing opportunities. All this often doesn't come easy. New Zealand's mountainous terrain is rugged, very wild but encompasses stunningly clear water and forest surroundings - the ultimate large trout recipe. Those that are prepared to put in some effort with me will be rewarded.

Experience the magic of sleeping within the New Zealand wilderness in comfortable tents or backcountry huts alongside the river valley. These huts are little havens for the backcountry fly fisher after an invigorating day in somewhat physically demanding wilderness trout country.

Let Johnny take care of the camp-out gear, superb backcountry food and meals without the demands of a heavy load on your back. Johnny is there to guide you, sherpa your gear and keep you safe. Your safety is the number one priority. A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) , satellite communicator and a comprehensive first aid kit are carried at all times.

A full day includes guiding, 4WD vehicle transport pick-up from your accomodation and drop-off, wader/boot hire

stream-side lunch, snacks and refreshments. An additional campout fee on top of the daily guide rate is applied per night of stay.

If you require wader and boot hire I stock a full size range of quality breathable waders and good sturdy, supportive wading boots.
